Mt. Takadake Hiking
Mt. Takadake, bordering Shimane Prefecture, stands by Lake Hijiri, which  is located in the most northeastern part of Hiroshima Prefecture. Lake Hijiri is a beautiful artificial lake. A half century ago, the upper reaches of the Shibaki River, which is one of the tributaries of the Ohta River, was dammed and made a lake which has another name of Tarutoko Dam.

From the dam’s parking place, we will walk north along the lake for 30 minutes to the trailhead of the mountain where there is a bridge across a mountain stream flowing into the lake. We will enter the mountain trail there, and walk along the stream for about 20 minutes, then take a 40-minute ascent to the mountaintop.

From the top, you can see a breathtaking view of the whole lake with scenic mountains including Mt. Garyu for a background. The autumn leaves will be beautiful at this time of the year.

This area is one of the habitats of Tsukinowa-kuma bears, so it is recommended to put a bell on your backpack in order to let them know of your presence as well as blowing a whistle to send them away.

After returning to the dam’s parking place, we will make a 30-minute round trip to Mitsudaki Falls (quintupled-stepped falls) which is one of five wonders of Sandankyo Valley. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

Go by car. Travel on the Chugoku Expressway heading west, and get off at the Togouchi exit. Then take Route 191 north for about 30 kilometers to the entrance of Lake Hijiri in the Geihoku area, and make a left turn. Cross the dam and the parking space, where we are to meet, is on the left. Follow the signboard that reads " 聖湖 ”which means Lake Hijiri. It will take about two hours from downtown Hiroshima.

高岳ハイキング
聖湖のそばにある高岳は聖山の北隣に位置し、広島県の北西端の町、島根県と接した北広島町芸北地区にあります。聖湖は約半世紀前に、柴木川 (大田川の支流) の上流に建設されたダムによってできた人造湖で、樽床貯水池とも呼ばれています。 

ダム堰堤のところの駐車場から、聖湖沿いに北に向かって約３０分歩くと樽床橋があり、橋を渡る手前に高岳の登山口があります。渓流沿いに２０分歩き、尾根道を４０分登ると頂上です。頂上からは真下に聖湖の全景が、その向こうには臥竜山や深入山の景色が望めます。美しい紅葉が楽しめると思います。

このあたりはツキノワ熊の生息地となっていますので、リュックサックには、熊に人間の存在を知らせる鈴を付けたり、笛など吹いたりして登りましょう。

下山は同じ道を下り、出発点の駐車場まで戻ります。そこからダム堰堤下に約１０分下ると、三段峡の五大壮観の一つ、三ツ滝があります。ここが三段峡の一番奥になります。ここもまた紅葉がすばらしいところです。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

中国自動車道の戸河内インターで下りて、国道191号線を深入山方向へ走ります。深入山を過ぎるとまもなく聖湖の標識があります。戸河内から約30kmです。聖湖の入り口の標識に従って左に入ります。しばらく行くと聖湖が見え、ダム堰堤を渡ったところに集合場所の駐車場があります。広島中心部から約2時間かかります。

中国自動車道の戸河内ICを出てすぐのところに道の駅｢来夢とごうち」があります。広島中心部から高速道で約１時間のところです。トイレ休憩ができ、弁当も売っています。

Mt. Shiraki Hiking
Mt. Shiraki attracts many hikers all year round, because it is the highest mountain in Hiroshima City, and it is also easily accessible by train. The 889-meter-high mountain is located 25 kilometers northeast from the central area of the city. We will take the Geibi Line and get off at Shiraki-yama Station.

From the station, we will cross the railroad tracks to the mountain, and walk up for about 10 minutes on the paved road, then enter the well-preserved mountain trail. In terms of the actual vertical hiking distance, there is not much difference between this mountain and the 1,712-meter Mt. Daisen which is the highest one in the Chugoku region.

It may be a bit hard to ascend the 800 meters in altitude for those who are not strong hikers, but it is worth conquering. The panoramic view of 360 degrees from the summit is breathtaking, weather permitting. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

白木山ハイキング
標高８８９ｍの白木山は広島市で一番高い山で、芸備線白木山駅（広島駅から40分）から登ることができ、アクセスが容易なため登山者に人気の山です。白木山駅で下りて、線路を渡り舗装道路を山側に約10分上って行くと、右手に白木山登山口があります。

麓から頂上までの高度差は約８００ｍです。この高度差で見ると、中国地方最高峰、１,７１２ｍの大山とそんなに大きな違いはありませんので、少々きついかもしれませんが、約２時間半かけて、休憩しながら、ゆっくり登って行きます。

天気が良ければ、頂上からは３６０度のすばらしい景色が望めますので、登山の疲れも吹き飛ぶことでしょう。下山は登りと同じ道を下ります。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

Oku-Hikimikyo Valley Hike

There are three beautiful valleys in Hikimi Town, Shimane Prefecture; Omote-Hikimikyo,  Ura-Hikimikyo and Oku-Hikimikyo. They are part of the Nishi-Chugoku Mountains Quasi National Park.

This time we will visit Oku-Hikimikyo Valley, neighboring Aki-Ohta Town in our prefecture. The entry point of the valley is Motogumi, Shimane Prefecture, which is a 20-minute drive on Route 191 from Shinnyuzan Ikoi-no-mura Hiroshima rest stop. The valley is located along the uppermost reaches of the Sannotani River which is a tributary of the Hikimi River which then joins the Takatsu River and finally flows into the Japan Sea. A two-kilometer walking trail goes up to the 53-meter-high Oryuzu Falls. You will encounter some other beautiful falls on the way to it, crossing the streams flowing on the rocks. A pair of felt-soled stream walking shoes or slip-resistant sneakers are recommended. The hike will be one hour and a half (round trip). Let’s enjoy a cool hike together. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

奥匹見峡ハイキング

島根県匹見町には三つの美しい渓谷があります。表匹見、裏匹見と奥匹見峡です。今回は広島県境から近い奥匹見峡に行きます。渓谷の入口（匹見町元組）は深入山のいこいの村ひろしまから車で約２０分のところにあります。

渓谷には西中国山地から流れ出る三の谷川に沿って歩道 (山道) が整備されており、途中いくつもの滝があります。約２ｋｍ歩いて一番奥まで行くと高さ５３ｍの滝「大竜頭」があります。渓流が流れる岩場を横切ったりして登って行くところがありますので、渓流シューズあるいは滑りにくいスニーカーのような履物が適当です。三の谷川は匹見川の支流で、匹見川は高津川と合流して日本海に流れ出ます。往復１時間半ですが、涼しいハイキングが楽しめると思います。

Mt. Dogo Hike & Mountain Opening Festival

The beautiful grass- covered Mt. Dogo is one of the most popular hiking spots in our prefecture. Now is the best season to enjoy fresh greenery, although the rainy season is drawing near.

On the third Sunday of June every year, the local tourist association holds the mountain opening events on the hillside of the mountain. The hillside is 1,000 meters above sea level. The events include a ceremony by priests praying for safe mountain climbing followed by kagura (Shinto music dancing), taiko drum playing and other local performing arts. We will watch them, then we will take a 2.5-hour hike to the top of the mountain and back. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

*Go by car. Get on the Chugoku Expressway heading east and get off at the Shobara exit. Then take Route 183 to Misaka, Saijo-cho. Follow the signboard that reads "道後山(Dogoyama)". It will take about one hour and a half to Shobara from Hiroshima and another hour to Dogoyama from Shobara.

*Your toll fee will become half (to \1,250 from Hiroshima or \950 from Hiroshima-Kita interchanges), if the Electronic Toll Collection System has been installed in your vehicle. *You can save the toll fee, if you can depart half an hour earlier to take the ordinary roads as follows:
Take Rte.54 and head for Miyoshi. After crossing the elevated Chugoku Expressway, make a right turn at the Funazou(船所) intersection and on the way to the Miyoshi interchange, turn right onto the Bihoku Koiki Nodo agricultural road, go for about five kilometers and cross Rte.184 and the Basen River and turn left onto Rte.431 to Wachi (和知), then enter Rte.183 to Shobara. Please check it on the map.

道後山ハイキングと山開きつつじ祭り

広島と鳥取との県境にあり、新緑の美しい道後山へ登ります。毎年６月の第三日曜日には、山開きつつじ祭りがあります。祭りは海抜千メートルの月見がﾞ丘で催されます。山開きの神事に続いて、神楽、太鼓など郷土芸能催が演じられます。見学後、道後山山頂まで約２時間半のハイキングをします。天気が良ければ、３６０度のすばらしい眺めが望めます。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

 中国自動車道の庄原ICで下りて、国道183号線を西城町三坂まで走ります。道後山の標識に従って道後山月見ｶﾞ丘まで上がって下さい。広島市内から庄原ICまで約１時間半、庄原から道後山まで１時間かかります。ETCの通勤割引 (6時～9時、17時～20時、100km以内) を利用すると、広島からの高速道路料金が半分の１，２５０円（片道）になります。

一般道でも渋滞がなければ約２時間で庄原まで行けます。国道５４号線を三次まで行き、高架の中国道を通り過ぎたところにある船所交差点を右折し、三次IC方向に入ります。途中で右折して、備北広域農道に入り、国道１８４号線、馬洗川を横切ってすぐ左折して、県道４３１号線に入り、和知で国道１８３号線に合流します。１０ｋｍ走れば庄原です。地図でご確認下さい。

Mt. Rengeji Hike

The 374-meter Rengeji (lotus flower temple) mountain is located in Aki Ward, Hiroshima City. On the foot of the mountain is Rengeji temple which was rebuilt in 1929 for the first time in 400 years. It is said that the original temple was founded on the top of the mountain in 808 by a great monk, Kukai, who was sent to China in 804 as a scholar to learn Buddhism, accompanied by a government envoy to the Tang dynasty.

After coming back to Bonotsu port on the Satsuma Peninsula in Satsuma, now Kagoshima Prefecture, he visited many places in western Japan on the way to Kyoto, propagating Shingon Buddhism. This temple site is one of those places he visited. In the 15th to 16th centuries, this temple prospered as a key religious center in this area, although it experienced a number of hardships such as fires of the buildings and also the temple itself having been demolished by Masanori Fukushima, head of Hiroshima Castle in 1602.

It will take one hour and a half to reach the mountaintop from the JR Aki-Nakano Station on the Sanyo Line. 88 stone Buddhist images were placed along the 2-kilometer trail between the foot and the old temple site top. Around the top is a relaxation forest park. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

蓮華寺山ハイキング

安芸区にある蓮華寺山に登ります。山麓には昭和4年(1929)、四百年ぶりに再建された蓮華寺があります。山頂には806年、真言宗布教の根拠地として空海上人が開基したという蓮華寺がありました。遣唐使と同行し唐に留学した空海は２年後、薩摩の坊津に帰ったと言われています。平安京に戻る間、西日本各地を訪れて、この地をはじめ各地に真言宗の根拠地を定めたと言われています。

蓮華寺は幾度か火災で焼失しましたが、その都度再建され、１５～１６世紀にかけて最も栄えたと言われています。しかし、１７世紀にはじめ広島城主の福島正則に寺領を没収され廃寺となったそうです。

麓の蓮華寺から山頂の本殿跡まで約2kmにわたり八十八ヶ所の石仏が建立され、各石仏の下には四国八十八ヶ寺の土が順番に納められているそうです。頂上一帯は 「憩いの森広場」として整備されています。雨天の場合この行事は中止します。

Mt. Ushita Hike & Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing)

We will take a counterclockwise 7-kilometer hiking course from the north side of JR Hiroshima Station, overlooking cherry blooming downtown Hiroshima. After that, we will head to the Hakushima hanami site on the bank of the Kyobashi River.

Our first stop will be Toshogu Shrine which was originally built in 1648 by Mitsuakira Asano, head of Hiroshima Castle, and dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa, shogun of the Edo bakufu government. From there, we will go up Mt. Futaba (139m) where the shining silvery Peace Pagoda stands. It was built by local residents in 1966 to console the sprits of the A-bomb victims.

The next peak will be Mt. Onaga (176m), and we will continue to walk on the ridges of Mt. Ushita (261m), Mt. Kanda (178m) and Mt. Mitate (116m). Then we will go down to the Ushita-Asahi area, and we will take a 15-minute walk to our hanami.

An explanation board at Mt. Mitate, which is located in the back of Higashi Ward Sport Center, says as follows:
Terumoto Mori, a feudal load, who was based in Koriyama Castle (45km northeast of Hiroshima) and governed almost the entire Chugoku region, came to Hiroshima in 1589 to seek a better location for his new castle. After he went up a couple peaks to have a good view of the Hiroshima delta, he went up this peak and saw what looked like an island (now the Hakushima area), on which many reeds grew thick, and decided to build the castle there. The construction of it began that year. It was done at a fast pace even though the ground was very soft. He was able to enter his new castle in 1591.

You can skip the hike and join only the hanami, or vice versa, if you prefer. Please feel free to bring your family members and friends. This cherry blossom viewing will start around noon. If it rains, this event will be canceled.

牛田山ハイキングと花見

広島駅新幹線口から山手に向かって約１０分歩くと東照宮があります。３６０年前、当時の広島藩主の浅野光晟が徳川家康に忠誠を示すため建てたと言われています。ここから反時計回りに、約７ｋｍのハイキングコースを、桜がまだ満開と思われる市街地を見下ろしながら歩きます。

先ず、仏舎利塔のある二葉山(139m)に登ります。仏舎利塔は戦後原爆犠牲者の霊を慰めるため地元の人たちが建てました。それから尾長山(176m)に登り、牛田山(261m)、神田山(178m)、見立山(116m)と尾根づたいに歩き、牛田旭のバスの終点辺りに下ります。そこから牛田大橋を渡り、京橋川沿いに下り、神田橋のたもとで花見をします。

見立山 (東区スポーツセンターの背後にある山) にある説明板にはこの山の由来が書いてあります。それによると、天正17年(1589年）当時中国地方の大半を制圧していた毛利輝元が広島に築城を思い立ち、吉田の郡山城からこの地を訪れ、どこに城を築くか思案した後この山に登り、葦の生い繁る三角州の島だった現在の白島を城の場所と「見立て」たそうです。地盤が軟弱で難工事でしたが築城は急ピッチで進み、２年後には輝元は入城を果たしたと言われています。

花見だけでも参加できます。ご家族、お友達を誘ってご参加下さい。花見は正午ごろからスタートの予定です。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

Mt. Nanakunimi Hiking & Abi (red throated divers) Watching

This time we will combine a hike with watching abi (red throated divers) which are Hiroshima prefectural birds.

First  we will take a 1.5-hour boat ride tour for Abi watching to the waters off Toyoshima and Kami-kamagari Islands from Kawajiri Port in Kure City. Afterwards we will land at Kenmin no Hama (Hiroshima Prefectural Citizen’s Beach) on Kami-Kamagari Island, and walk to Mt. Nanakunimi. It will take an hour or so to ascend it. We will have a good chance to watch our prefecture’s birds, and will enjoy splendid views from both the sea and the mountain, weather permitting.

Abi, migratory birds from the Arctic Ocean, come to spend winter time around here, making many stopovers along the Japanese archipelago. Fishermen in this area used to do sea bream-fishing with the help of Abi who let them know good fishing spots. Abi divers like to eat sand eels and chase them. The sand eels flee deep into the bottom of the sea and lure sea breams. Fishermen drop a line there with several hooks using sand eels for bait. They can hook sea breams easily.

This fishing method continued for about 300 years, but it was suspended decades ago, because the number of the birds decreased to about 150 from several thousands at the peak time. Now these waters have become a special preservation district in the hope of many more abi returning.

If it rains, this outing will be postponed to Sunday, March 2nd.

Take a train for Hiro on Kure Line at 8:07 at Hiroshima Station, and change another train for Mihara there and get off at Kawajiri Station.

＊Participation fee: About \1,000 per person for chartered boat fee.
Please remember that the organizer of this outing will not insure the participants of the outing against accidental injuries.

A one-way ticket between Hiroshima and Kawajiri Stations will cost \740, and bus fare between Kami-Kamagari Island and Hiro Station will be \760.

広島県の鳥・アビ観察と七国見山ハイク

渡り鳥で県の鳥のアビを観察し、上蒲刈島の七国見山に登ります。まず、呉の川尻港から豊島や上蒲刈島の沖合いまで行き、船上からアビを見ます。この海域はアビ渡来郡遊海面として、広島県の特別保護区に指定されています。乗船時間は約1時間半の予定です。その後、県民の浜(上蒲刈島)に上陸し、恋ケ浜沿いに約１ｋｍ歩き、七国見山に登ります。登りは約1時間です。天気が良ければ、すばらしい眺めを楽しむことができると思われます。

アビは遠く北極海から日本列島に沿って南下し、途中立ち寄りながら、この海域に飛来し冬を過ごします。豊島近海では、三百年前の江戸時代から昭和４０年代にかけて、アビ漁と呼ばれる鯛の一本釣りが盛んに行われていました。
　アビはイカナゴが大好物で群れをなしてイカナゴを追いかけ捕食 (とらえて食う) します。イカナゴが海底近くまで逃げると鯛などがそれを食べようと集まってきます。アビがいるところに鯛がいるわけで、数個の釣り針の付いた一本の釣り糸でイカナゴをえさに鯛を釣ります。
　かって、アビは数千羽飛来していたそうですが、今では１５０から１６０羽ぐらいと少なくなり、このようなアビと協力して行われてきた魚法は途絶えています。また昔のようにアビがたくさん戻り、伝統のアビ魚が復活されるよう期待されます。
雨天の場合、この行事は１週間後の３月２日(日)に延期します。

　広島駅午前8時07分発呉線の広行きに乗車し、広駅で三原行きに乗換え、川尻駅で下車して下さい。　

＊参加費用：海上タクシー代として、1人当たり約1,000円。実費精算します。
保険はかけていませんので、ご了解のうえご参加下さい。
＊装備： 登山に適した服装、雨具、防寒衣、水筒、弁当、双眼鏡
