Camping Trip to Hamada, July 18-19

Masahide Nakamura and Joe Lauer will lead a camping trip to Hamada in Shimane Prefecture, SLEEPING in TENTS,
Sat-Sun July 18-19.

We'll meet at Iwami Park between 11 a.m. and 12 noon. (Cars will depart from Hiroshima at about 9 a.m.) We'll disband at about noon on Sunday. Please bring as much camping equipment (a tent, a sleeping bag, etc.) as you can, but if you do not have equipment or a car, no problem! We will try to find equipment and transportation
for you.

石見海浜公園でのキャンプ：7月18日．19日(土．日)

浜田でのテント泊キャンプをご案内いたします。
水族館「アクアス」に隣接する海沿いのキャンプ場で、楽しい週末を過ごしましょう。
集合は現地、18日の11時～12時が目安で、広島を9時ごろに出発すれば着ける時間です。解散は19日の12時ごろです。

交通手段はこちらで調整いたします。テントや寝袋などキャンプ用品もある程度こちらで確保しますが、できるだけご自分でご用意ください。

Chikurinji Temple & Mt. Takamura

Chikurinji Temple, situated on the 535-meter Takamura mountain, is located in Kochi Town, Higashi-Hiroshima City. Our hike will start from JR Nyuno Station on the Sanyo Line. We will first cross Route 432, and walk up the slope which leads to a residential area called Grunen Nyuno, for about 10 minutes to the trail head of the mountain where there is a parking place. There is a good well there from which you can pump mineral water.

We will walk up a 1.6-kilometer-long mountain trail to Chikurinji Temple for about one hour. The temple is surrounded by old cedar trees and a bamboo grove along with a spring called Yachiyo-ike. At this time of the year many beautiful flowers will be blooming in and around the pond such as irises, lotus flowers and hydrangeas. This area is designated as a prefectural nature park. We will take a paved road to descend to JR Kochi Station. It will take about 1.5 hours.

Old picture scrolls of the temple say as follows:
It was founded by a great monk, Gyoki, in 730. When he was going on a pilgrimage along the coast of the Inland Sea in Takehara, he saw a shining object like a sacred light on a mountain. It led him to the mountain, and he found a huge brilliant cherry tree in full bloom. He cut the tree and sculpted it to make a Senju Kannon,a Buddha statue with a thousand hands, to save people from various hardships. The Kannon statue became the temple's principal image.

竹林寺　篁山ハイク

山陽線JR入野駅を出て直ぐ国道432号を渡り、グリューネン入野団地方向に坂道を登れば、すぐに竹林寺の標識があり、左 手の駐車場の隅には「篁水（こうすい）」の水くみ場があります。そこから１．６ｋｍの参道に入り、約1時間登ると竹林寺があります。

竹林寺の縁起絵巻によると、寺は730年(天平2年)創建で、奈良時代の僧「行基」が竹原市大井の浦を諸国巡遊中、山の頂より霊光が放たれているのを見て、この山を訪れたそうです。この霊光は大樹の山桜が開花し光り輝いていたもので、この木を切り、千手観音尊像を彫り、お堂を建て本尊としたとのことです。

竹林や大杉の木立に囲まれた寺一帯は県立自然公園となっています。境内には八千代池と呼ばれる泉があり、この時期はショウブ、ハス、アジサイなど花が美しく咲いていると思われます。下山は舗装道路を約1時間半歩いて河内駅に下ります。
雨天の場合、この行事は中止します。

Fresh Green Mt. Shinnyu
Mt. Shinnyu, located north of Sandankyo Valley, is one of the most popular hiking destinations, especially at this time of the year because of beautiful fresh greenery.

At the foot of the mountain, about 800 meters above sea level, is a public hotel called Ikoi-no-mura Hiroshima. We are to meet there. Looking up the dome-shaped mountain from the hotel’s parking lot, it looks almost grass-covered, but part of the west side of the mountain is covered with forest.

First we will walk for about 1.5 kilometers to the south entry point of the mountain, and enter the fresh green forest. It will take about two hours to the mountaintop at a leisurely pace. A panoramic view of ranges of mountains including Mt. Osorakan and Mt. Garyu along with picturesque Lake Hijiri will be breathtaking. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

Go by car. Travel on the Chugoku Expressway heading west, and get off at the Togouchi exit. Then take Route 191 north for about 16 kilometers. Follow the signboard that reads “深入山” which means Mt. Shinnyu. It will take about 1.5 hours from the central area of Hiroshima City.

新緑の深入山
山々が新緑で美しい季節になりました。今回は、ちょうど三段峡の北に位置し西中国山地国定公園の一部でもある深入山に登ります。海抜約800mの山の麓には「いこいの村ひろしま」があります。ここの駐車場が集合場所です。ここから山を見上げると、ほとんどが草原のように見えますが、山の西側は森に覆われています。

まず、ここから運動広場などある南側登山口まで西方向に約1.5ｋｍ歩き、林間コースに入ります。頂上までは少し大回りになりますが、新緑を十分満喫できると思われます。頂上からは、聖湖や恐羅漢山、臥竜山、聖山などの西中国山地の山々の360度パノラマの眺めが望めます。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

Mt. Ushita Hike & Hanami (Cherry Blossom Viewing)

We will take a counterclockwise 7-kilometer hiking course from the north side of JR Hiroshima Station, overlooking cherry blooming downtown Hiroshima. After that, we will head to the Hakushima hanami site on the bank of the Kyobashi River.

Our first stop will be Toshogu Shrine which was originally built in 1648 by Mitsuakira Asano, head of Hiroshima Castle, and dedicated to Ieyasu Tokugawa, shogun of the Edo bakufu government. From there, we will go up Mt. Futaba (139m) where the shining silvery Peace Pagoda stands.

It was built by local residents in 1966 to console the spirits of the A-bomb victims. The next peak will be Mt. Onaga (176m), and we will continue to walk on the ridges of Mt. Ushita (261m), Mt. Kanda (178m) and Mt. Mitate (116m). Then we will go down to the Ushita-Asahi area, and we will take a 15-minute walk to our hanami.

An explanation board at Mt. Mitate, which is located in the back of Higashi Ward Sport Center, says as follows:
Terumoto Mori, a feudal load, who was based in Koriyama Castle (45km northeast of Hiroshima) and governed almost the entire Chugoku region, came to Hiroshima in 1589 to seek a better location for his new castle. After he went up a couple peaks to have a good view of the Hiroshima delta, he went up this peak and saw what looked like an island, on which many reeds grew thick, and decided to build the castle there. The construction of it began that year. It was done at a fast pace even though the ground was very soft. He was able to enter his new castle in 1591.

You can skip the hike and join only the hanami, or vice versa, if you prefer. Please feel free to bring your family members and friends. This cherry blossom viewing will start around noon. If it rains, this event will be canceled.

牛田山ハイキングと花見

広島駅新幹線口から山手に向かって約１０分歩くと東照宮があります。３６０年前、当時の広島藩主の浅野光晟が徳川家康に忠誠を示すため建てたと言われています。ここから反時計回りに、約７ｋｍのハイキングコースを、桜がまだ満開と思われる市街地を見下ろしながら歩きます。

先ず、仏舎利塔のある二葉山(139m)に登ります。仏舎利塔は戦後原爆犠牲者の霊を慰めるため地元の人たちが建てました。それから尾長山(176m)に登り、牛田山(261m)、神田山(178m)、見立山(116m)と尾根づたいに歩き、牛田旭のバスの終点辺りに下ります。そこから牛田大橋を渡り、京橋川沿いに下り、神田橋のたもとで花見をします。

見立山 (東区スポーツセンターの背後にある山) にある説明板にはこの山の由来が書いてあります。それによると、天正17年(1589年）当時中国地方の大半を制圧していた毛利輝元が広島に築城を思い立ち、吉田の郡山城からこの地を訪れ、どこに城を築くか思案した後この山に登り、葦の生い繁る三角州の島だった現在の城の場所と「見立て」たそうです。地盤が軟弱で難工事でしたが築城は急ピッチで進み、２年後には輝元は入城を果たしたと言われています。

花見だけでも参加できます。ご家族、お友達を誘ってご参加下さい。花見は正午ごろからスタートの予定です。雨天の場合はこの行事は中止します。

Mt. Tengujo Hike
The 293-meter rocky Mt. Tengujo stands at the front of Kure-Portopia Station on the Kure Line. On the other side of the station is a citizen’s park named Kure Portopia Park, which opened at the former amusement park site in 2000. The amusement park had been set up by Kure City together with an Osaka-based private electric railway company, Hankyu, in 1992.

At the same time Japan Railway also built a new station there. However the third sector went bankrupt after six years from its opening because of the decreasing number of visitors.

From the station we will walk along the Route 31 toward kure for about five minutes until we reach a fountain pen factory. We will cross the railroad tracks to the mountain side and walk to the trail head for 10 minutes crossing the elevated Kurea Line (Hiroshima Kure Road) expressway. Mt. Tengujo will be a one hour-ascent from there. It was said there was a lookout fort on the mountaintop in the 15th-16th centuries (the age of civil wars). Needless to say, the view is fantastic.

We will go up a couple more peaks for about one hour. After having lunch at the last peak, Mt. Komatsu（379m）, we will take an hour descent to JR Koyaura Station, which is one stop toward Hiroshima from the starting point. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

天狗城山ハイク
天狗城山は呉ポートピア駅のすぐ目の前にある高さ293mの岩山です。駅の海側には呉ポートピアパークがあります。2000年に呉ポートピアランド跡地に市民公園として開園しました。以前あった呉ポートピアランドは呉市と阪急電鉄が出資して第三セクターとして１９９２年に開園し、それにあわせてJRの呉ポートピア駅も開設されました。しかし、この第三セクターは入場者数の激減で、6年後の１９９８年には経営破綻してしまいました。

駅から呉方向に国道３１号線沿いを5分歩くと万年筆工場があります。線路を山側に渡り10分歩きクレアライン（広島呉道路）の高架の下をくぐると登山口があります。天狗城山までは約1時間です。山頂には15世紀から１６世紀ころの戦国時代に見張りの砦があったと言われています。山頂下の岩場からは瀬戸内海のすばらしい眺めが望めます。

天狗城山からさらに１時間かけて二つピークを登り、小松尾山（３７９ｍ）で昼食の予定です。中国自然歩道を通って小屋浦駅　(出発点から一つ広島寄りの駅)　に下ります。雨天の場合、この行事は中止します。

We are going to visit Mihara City which was a castle town. Takakage Kobayakawa, the third son of a great war lord, Motonari Mori (1497-1571), built a 900-meter long, 700-meter wide castle in 1567 at the mouth of the Nutagawa River, connecting small and large islands with stone walls. He wanted to control the Inland Sea which was a busy trading route even then. Local people still fondly call it “Uki-shiro” (floating castle), because it looked like that when high tides occurred.

A synthetic silk thread manufacturer, Teijin, made a factory here in1933, and afterwards so did a heavy industry maker, Mitsubishi. Since then Mihara has grown into an industrial city.

From JR Mihara Station, we will walk south two kilometers to the trailhead of Mt. Fudekage, crossing Nuta Ohashi Bridge which spans the Nutagawa River. From there, we will take a 3.6-kilometer course up the 313-meter mountain which is a part of the Seto Inland National Park together with the neighboring 445-meter Mt. Ryuo. It commands the finest view of many studded islands spread out as far as Shikoku.

After having a good lunch time, we will take a different 3.5-kilometer course on a paved road to JR Sunami Station on the Kure Line. If it rains, this outing will be canceled.

三原 筆影山ハイク

三原は毛利元就(1497-1571)の三男の小早川隆景が永禄10年(1567年)交易路として重要な瀬戸内海を制するため沼田川の河口に三原城を築いて以来城下町として発展しました。城は東西900m、南北700mに渡って沼田川河口の大小の島々を石垣でつないで築かれたそうです。満潮時には城が海に浮かんで見えたところから「浮城」とも呼ばれました。

1933年に帝国人造絹糸が進出し、その後三菱重工業も大工場をつくり、以来三原は工業都市として発展してきました。

三原駅から南方向に約2km歩き、沼田川に架かる沼田大橋を渡ると筆影山の登山口の和田口に到着します。そこから3.6kmの登山ルートを登ると頂上です。筆影山と隣の竜王山(445m)は瀬戸内海国立公園の一部となっています。眼下から遠く四国まで広がる瀬戸の島々の眺望はすばらしいものです。昼食後は別のルート(約3.5km)を呉線の須波駅に向けて下ります。雨天の場合、この行事は中止します。

2009 New Year Entertainment at Matsukasa Kannonji Temple in Higashi Ward, Hiroshima

Visitors to the temple will get a warm welcome during the first three days of the New Year. A cup of sake, a bowl of zenzai (bean soup with sugar and rice cakes), and a towel will be presented to the first 200 comers.

Handmade soba (buckwheat noodles) will also be provided from 1pm to 4pm on January 1, and from 10am to 4pm on January 2 and 3.

Getting there:
Take a JR train on the Geibi Line and get off at Hesaka Station. Cross the railroad tracks to the mountain, and walk up for a few minutes to the paved road, then enter the mountain trail. It will take 40 minutes to reach the temple.

松笠観音寺　正月のお接待

正月は元日から三日まで松笠観音寺で蕎麦を打ちます。 そばは次の時間帯にはいつでも供します。ご接待しますので、ご家族でどうぞ。

この寺のスゴイところは、鐘を撞けばタオルを、さらに参拝された方にはぜんざいやお神酒を焚き火を囲んで召し上がっていただきます。その上、縁起のいい蕎麦を供します。この山寺には参詣者は限られますが、お神酒、ぜんざい、タオルは先着２００名まで。天気がよければ頂上まで登られるようにお勧めします。

芸備線戸坂駅（広島駅から二つ目の駅） で下車、線路を山側に渡って、鳥居をぐって上の舗装道路まで出たら、墓所の右手にある山道に入って下さい。戸坂駅から約40分で松笠観音寺に到着します。
